FAQ: Oil Change

Motor oil is essential, and the following guide will provide you with a better understanding of this very important aspect:
Does motor oil expire?

The short answer is yes; however, there are a number of factors that will influence this aspect. If the oil bottle has never been opened and if it has been stored correctly in the right environment without high humidity, you may be able to use the oil because it likely has not expired. It’s not always easy to figure this out, which is why professional oil changes are always recommended. This way, you won’t have to worry about expired motor oil and can drive with peace of mind knowing your old oil has been properly replaced.
Is there a way to know that my motor oil is bad?

You can always pull out the dipstick to check on your oil. If you see that the oil is coming out in globs or that it feels gritty between your fingers, these are signs that your engine oil is bad and that it’s time for an oil change. The same is true if the oil is milky in appearance because this means your oil may be interacting with water and this is a serious problem that will require immediate attention. If this is the case, your vehicle may need more than just an oil change.
Is black oil on my dipstick concerning?

If your dipstick reveals a black oil, you don’t have to worry because that colouring is normal and is actually an indication that the oil is doing its job. If for any reason you are concerned or feel as though there is a problem with the colour of your motor oil, take your vehicle to a professional technician so that they can assess the situation.
How often do I need to change my oil?

The answer to this will vary because it will depend on the driving conditions and type of vehicle you have, although changing your oil every 5,000 kilometres is generally recommended. It’s always best to check your vehicle’s maintenance schedule to be sure because some engines are designed to run longer, so consult your owner’s manual for such specifications and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Is it dangerous to change my own oil?

There are risks associated with this, so be careful if you decide to change your own oil. You need to make sure you use the right motor oil and must not overlook any leaks as these can be very problematic. The process can also be very messy and you will have to dispose of the motor oil properly, so it’s not always a good idea to do this on your own.
